The Verendrye plate is a small lead tablet. It is about six inches high and eight inches long. It is thin, only one-eighth of an inch thick. The writing on one side is in Latin. On the other side is a message in French. It is scratched onto the plate with a knife. It says: "Placed by the Chevalier de la Verendrye, witnesses Louis-Joseph, La Londette and A. Miotte, the 30th of March 1743."
