A group of seven teenagers from Fort Pierre were out for a walk on a warm Sunday afternoon in February 1913. They had gone up a bluff with a great view of the river and the town below. Harriet Foster tripped over something sticking out of the ground. George O’Reilly and others dug it out and scraped the dirt off. The students could not read the words. They thought they would sell the plate for scrap. Luckily they met some people who knew its value. The plate is now in the Museum of the State Historical Society in the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre. The students in the picture are Leslie Stroup, Harriet Foster, and George O’Reilly. |
