Prairie Dogs

     Prairie dogs are large, chunky ground squirrels that look like small, fat puppies. They live in "towns" where they dig burrows and pile dirt near their holes. The animals stand on the dirt mounds to watch for danger.

   "The village of those animals covers about 4 acres . . . and contains great numbers of holes on the top of which those little animals sit erect and make a whistling noise and when alarmed slip into their hole."—Clark’s journal, September 7, 1804
