James Philip was born in Scotland. In America, people called him Scotty. He looked for gold in the Black Hills. He was an army scout. In 1881, he began ranching. His first ranch was near Philip, South Dakota. Philip is named after Scotty Philip. Scotty Philip married Sarah Larribee. Sarah was part French and part Cheyenne Indian. They started a second ranch. It was near Fort Pierre. Scotty and his family helped to save the bison.
