Crazy Horse was born on Rapid Creek in 1843. He was the son of an Oglala medicine man. His mother was a Brulé and the sister of Spotted Tail (learn about him in Unit 5). Crazy Horse became known for his courage in the war over the Bozeman Trail. He became war chief of the Oglalas. He had some Brulé followers as well. Crazy Horse opposed the opening of the Black Hills. He led his men against the United States Army in Montana. Afterwards, Crazy Horse led his people back to the Rosebud River. They grew hungry and went into the Red Cloud Agency in northwestern Nebraska. Crazy Horse was killed there as he tried to give up. He was only thirty-four years old. He is remembered as a brave man who wanted his people to stay free.
