| An old story tells that Lewis and Clark wrapped a newborn Yankton baby in an American flag. The explorers were visiting the Yankton village in 1804. They said that the little boy would become a great leader. The story says that this baby was Struck-by-the-Ree. No one knows if the story is true, but Struck-by-the-Ree was a leader of the Yanktons. He loved peace and did not want war with the white settlers or the United States. He urged his people to sign the land treaty of 1858. Struck-by-the-Ree also kept his people out of war when the Dakotas were fighting in Minnesota. He lived to be an old man and died in 1888. |
