The word "lead" means mineral deposit. The city of Lead, South Dakota, was settled in 1876 during the gold rush. It was the site of many mining claims. Few prospectors were able to make large finds. Soon they sold their claims to the Homestake Mining Company. Before long, the Homestake was a big business. Many people worked there. Immigrants from all over the world came to Lead to work for the mine. Their many diverse customs made Lead a unique city.  The Homestake Mining Company closed down at the end of 2001.
