A group of men from Nebraska started the town of Gregory. The year was 1904. They named the town after John Shaw Gregory. He had been a member of the first Dakota legislature. Soon there were one hundred fifty buildings in town. Gregory had good farmland around it. It also had the only flour mill in the area. Today, Gregory hosts the Oscar Micheaux Film Festival each year. The festival celebrates the life of Oscar Micheaux. People from all over the United States come to it. They come to watch Micheaux's movies. They listen to talks about him, and they visit his homestead.
