South Dakota Writers' Project, Work Projects Administration, comp. Legends of the Mighty Sioux. Illus. Oscar Howe. 1941. Reprint ed., Interior, S.Dak.: Badlands Natural History Association, 1987. These forty-five traditional legends of the Sioux were originally compiled in 1941. The stories come from elders on the Rosebud and Yankton reservations.

Zitkala-Sa [Gertrude Bonnin]. American Indian Stories. 1921. Reprint ed., Lincoln: University of Nebraska Press, 1986. This grouping of easy-to-read essays is partly autobiographical.

Zitkala Ša. Dance in a Buffalo Skull Illustrated by S. D. Nelson. Pierre: South Dakota Historical Society Press, 2007. An old buffalo skull provides the setting for the field mice who enjoy a great feast and dance in this traditional story.
