Clark, Badger. Spike. Boston: Richard G. Badger, 1925. These short stories are based on Clark’s observations as a cowboy.

Clark, Badger. Sun and Saddle Leather: A Collection of Poems. Centennial ed. Tucson, Ariz.: Westerners International, 1983. This collection of Clark’s poems contains a brief biography of the poet.

Dockstader, Frederick J., ed. Oscar Howe: A Retrospective Exhibition. Tulsa, Okla.: Thomas Gilcrease Museum Association, 1982. This book showcases Oscar Howe’s artwork and gives a brief biography.

Fite, Gilbert Courtland. Peter Norbeck: Prairie Statesman. Pierre: South Dakota Historical Society Press, 2005. This book details the life of Peter Norbeck, South Dakota’s progressive Republican governor and senator, strong supporter of Theodore Roosevelt, and early conservationist.

Micheaux, Oscar. The Homesteader: A Novel. 1917. Reprint ed., Lincoln: University of Nebraska Press, 1994. Micheaux’s story of the pioneer life of African Americans in South Dakota is reissued for modern readers.

Rappaport, Doreen. The Flight of Red Bird: The Life of Zitkala-Sa. New York: Puffin Books, 1999. The life of Gertrude Bonnin is told through her own writings.

Taylor, Betti VanEpps. Forgotten Lives: African Americans in South Dakota. Pierre: South Dakota Historical Society Press, 2008. This book provides insights into the often-neglected history of African Americans in South Dakota.

Van Epps-Taylor, Betti C. Oscar Micheaux: A Biography. Rapid City, S.Dak.: Dakota West Books, 1999. The first full-scale biography of Micheaux looks at his careers as homesteader, author, and filmmaker.

Wik, Reynold M. "Radio in the 1920s: A Social Force in South Dakota." South Dakota History 11 (Spring 1981):93-110. Wik provides a history of early radio in the state.
