The radio station WNAX was in Yankton. It was one of the first commercial stations to broadcast in South Dakota. It started in 1922. Gurney Seed and Nursery Company bought it five years later. The company put up 125-foot antennas. It advertised seeds, trees, plants, baby chicks, and other things. The station broadcast weather reports and farm market news. Its humor and music shows made it famous. It hired traveling bands to play music on the air. Lawrence Welk was the leader of one of these bands. He later had his own television show. People could listen to WNAX as far as five hundred miles away from Yankton.
