Captain 11 was really a man named Dave Dedrick. He was called Captain 11 because his program was on Channel 11. It was better known as KELO-TV. KELO started in 1953 in Sioux Falls. Dave Dedrick was an announcer and a weatherman. Then he became the host of the children's show. It, too, was called "Captain 11." In his blue jumpsuit, Dedrick would talk with children who came from all over the Upper Midwest to be on the show. He would run cartoons and give away prizes. Children who came to the show on their birthday could flip a switch on his famous control panel. It was called the time converter. "Captain 11" was on the air for the last time in December 1996. For forty-one years, it was the longest-running children's program in the area. Dave Dedrick is in the South Dakota Broadcasters Hall of Fame. The "Captain 11" set is now in the Museum of the South Dakota State Historical Society at the Cultural Heritage Center in Pierre.
