The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) put young men to work in national forests and parks. They built roads and dams. They also thinned forests and planted trees. CCC workers usually ranged in age from 18 to 25. They earned $30 a month. They lived in camps. Most of the South Dakota camps were in the Black Hills. One group worked at Farm Island near Pierre. Another worked at Orman Dam near Belle Fourche. About 26,000 South Dakotans worked for the CCC during the Great Depression.
