| South Dakota
passed the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA). It was 1973. The ERA was an
amendment to the United States Constitution. It said that equality of
rights could not be denied because of someone’s sex. It meant that
women and men had to be treated in the same way under the law. Many
people were afraid of what this might mean. Congress passed the
amendment, but it never became part of the Constitution. Not enough states would pass it.
Even South Dakota took back its approval six years later. |
