Reverend Thomas L. Riggs set up a mission on the east bank of the Missouri River in 1874. This mission was called Oahe Mission. It was on Peoria Bottom close to Fort Sully. The mission had a boarding school and a chapel. The teachers taught reading and writing in the Lakota language. Church services were held in the chapel. It was later moved to the Oahe Dam. It is still standing there. The rest of the buildings are under the waters of Lake Oahe.
