The Chicago & North Western Railway built this house in 1878. It was for railroad workers to use. It was the first house near the town of De Smet. Laura Ingalls and her family lived there a year later. She tells this story in her book By the Shores of Silver Lake. The home is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You can still visit it today.
