Little is known about Hugh Glass. This mysterious mountain man is said to have come from Pennsylvania. Some also say he sailed with the famous pirate Jean Lafitte. Then he became a hunter for the Rocky Mountain Fur Company. In 1823, he was traveling up the Grand River. South of Lemmon, a grizzly bear attacked him. The men with him thought he was dead. They left him behind. But Hugh Glass lived. Then he crawled, walked, and rafted two hundred miles to Fort Kiowa near Chamberlain. Movies and books have been written about his adventure. Hugh Glass died ten years later in a fight with the Arikara Indians.
