Jedediah Smith was one of the fur traders who were attacked by the Arikaras in South Dakota. He said a prayer among the wounded and dying men. He then went for help and came back to the area with the army. He started his own fur-trade company and became famous. He was killed by the Comanches in Kansas in 1831. His story is often told in books and movies about the West.
